This lovely song- My Motherland 我的祖國, controversial as it may be, is simply beautiful! Originally featured in a 1956 Chinese movie 上甘岭 -Battle on Shangganling Mountain: The film depicts the Battle of Triangle Hill during the Korean War which American soldiers recall as especially hard fought (from Wikipedia). I never touch on politics in my blog, but I deeply love this song, and would like to share here. It’s also interesting to see people’s controversial interpretation when it’s sang or even talked about in different occasions (see below).
The original version sung by Guo Lanying –郭兰英 is my favourite version, and of course the 2014 version by the First Lady (Mrs Xi)-Peng Liyuan (above) at Hong Kong Colosseum; also is this recent one by 龔爽 – Gong Shuang- Graduated from the China Conservatory of Music Department of audio and video 2012; Others include that one by Lang Lang, etc. Below are some notes from Wikipedia, if you’re interested. It’s reported being rather controversial when this song was performed or discussed including when Lang Lang performed this in 2011 during the national dinner in the presence of Chinese President Hu and US president Obama – when some criticized as an anti-US gesture. In late 2016, it also created much heated discussions online when Dr Albert Chau (Vice President of Hong Kong Baptist University) quoted this song as his “enlightenment song’ (啟蒙歌曲) in response to Prof Lung Ying-tai’s (Head of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture 2012-2014, prominent Taiwanese essayist and cultural critic) question in a forum held in University of Hong Kong. And to her surprise, most of those present ended up singing this song together- a rather moving occasion. With the wide and heated discussion, Prof Lung responded later but her last sentence triggered yet another critics from Mainland press too. (see below).
《我的祖国》原名《一条大河》，是电影《上甘岭》的插曲。这首歌诞生于1956年夏天。《我的祖国》是诗人乔羽和作曲家刘炽合作完成，由郭兰英演唱。这首优秀的抒情歌曲，深切地表达了浓烈的爱国主义思想。歌曲前一部分以抒情的女高音形式，一种波涌而来的思乡之情，洋溢在甜美的歌声中，使人仿佛看到祖国伟大壮阔山河、田野稻浪飘香的美丽景色。后一部分用混声合唱形式，与前段形成鲜明的对比，唱出了这是美丽的祖国的主题，激情澎湃，气势磅礴。
《我的祖國》有很多錄音版本，不過仍以原唱者女高音郭蘭英的版本最為經典。1995年，中國唱片廣州公司出版的《一條大河 喬羽歌詞作品專輯》中收錄了這首歌在1959年錄音的原版[4]。郭蘭英也在多張精選集中收錄了這首歌。
此外，女高音李谷一、彭麗媛、張也、宋祖英等也曾錄音演唱《我的祖國》。香港藝人汪明荃也曾多次演繹該首歌曲，並稱其為自己從小就最愛的歌曲
- 2011年1月19日，中國國家主席胡錦濤到美國進行國事訪問，時任白宮主人，美國總統奧巴馬在歡迎胡錦濤的國宴上邀請鋼琴家郎朗演奏《我的祖國》，被外界誤為以抗美援朝電影的歌曲藉機表達反美，而極少數美國右派媒體與部分人士則表示非議，認為在隆重舉辦的國宴中，這首歌曲羞辱了奧巴馬與美國人。之後郎朗在網誌放上在白宮演出的照片，並寫說，「而後我又獨自演奏了我們中國人心目中『最美的歌』之一的《我的祖國》。能夠在眾多外賓，尤其是在來自『五湖四海』的元首們面前演奏這首讚美中國的樂曲，彷彿是在向他們訴說我們中國的強大，我們中國人的團結，我感到深深的榮幸和自豪。和大家分享在白宮的一天」。[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]表示選擇該曲僅因為其旋律優美，希望不要有政治聯想。[15]
- 龍應台香港大學演講事件：2016年10月7日，台灣作家龍應台在香港媒體與香港大學推出的《一首歌，一個時代》講座上發表演講。當龍應台與台下聽眾互動，詢問聽眾啟蒙歌曲是哪一首時，香港浸會大學副校長周偉立博士表示自己的啟蒙歌曲是《我的祖國》。龍應台問：「真的？《我的祖國》怎麼唱？頭一句是什麼？」隨後全場合唱此歌[16][17]。此事中國大陸網絡上激起爭議和討論。12月18日，龍應台在港媒發表文章《大河就是大河》，回應此事稱「有時候，真的，大河就是大河，稻花就是稻花罷了[18]。」引來《解放軍報》刊文《大河不只是大河》反駁龍應台，稱「這條大河，記載着一場保家衛國的戰爭，蘊藏着一個民族的文化記憶。

龍應台稱，讓我驚訝的是，原以為大陸人之間會有代溝－－也許年輕人不太會唱，但是發現年輕人一樣純熟地唱；原以為港人可能不太會，發現港人能唱的也很多。一首歌，在不同的時空裡，撞見不同的記憶，就產生不同的情愫和意義。歌的意義會轉換，歌的溫柔力道強於刀劍，正好是我整個演講的核心。有時候，真的，大河就是大河，稻浪就是稻浪罷了。
