Guangzhou (GZ) is the third largest Chinese city and the largest city in South Central China. In 2014 the city’s administrative area was estimated to have a population of 14.08 million.  It is a very popular city for tourists and serves as a centre for hopping to nearby scenic and historic areas including e.g. Conghua in the north for famous hotsprings, Foshan in the west (accessible by subway from Guangzhou), etc.  Guangzhou is easily accessible by train from Hong Kong and the subway transport system within Guangzhou is well developed and ever-expanding.  Travellers to GZ should take note that..there are several train stations in GZ, and there are many maps being sold or online that are showing old or planned (future) subway routes.  Above are the latest subway maps (2015), including one which also shows the link to the Foshan subway.  But for the latest current situation including real time delay, you should visit GZ MTR Official website, and their real time map.

Please note that there are 3 train (not subway) stations in GZ – the GZ Station, GZ East Station and the GZ South (Guangzhounan) Station, and they are quite far from each other, so make sure you land on the right station for connecting trains.  If you are using GZ as a springboard for high speed rail travel to other areas in China,GZ South (Guangzhounan) Station is the one, it has HS trains taking you to Chengdu, Guiyang (Guizhou), Beijing, etc.  Bon Voyage!
