Removing the tram service in Central/Admiralty, Hong Kong?

2015-08-19_13-45-49If you live or have been to Hong Kong, you’d agree with me that taking the tram is a way to enjoy carefree life here.  A recent submission to Town Planning Board proposed to remove the tramway/service of a section in Central and Admiralty (Jubilee to Arsenal Street).  I think this is illogical, unsound and ridiculous.  I’d ask you to study this proposal here, and voice out ..your opinion/comment here, below is my submission showing why I object to it.

I object to the proposal based on:-
1. The said existing tramway is shared by all modes of transport using the said road sections, hence the argument that it uses
up 30% of the road area does not stand.
2. Many people uses the said tramway for every day life activities, to many, this is the best transport for them in the area-
efficient, best value for money. Contrary to the Proposer’s arguments, using the tram there works out in most cases to be
more efficient than using MTR – about the same time and saves much walking up and down and more comfortable.
3. It’s enjoyed by most HK people as well as tourists- there seems no better way to feel the pulse of our vibrant city than to
watch the daily happenings from a tram.
4. Tram service has been serving HK people well for over 111 years, and with continual maintenance and improvements, there
is no reason why it cannot continue to serve HK people well, the said section is in the heart of HK’s CBD and used by and
has been benefiting a lot of HK people.
5. The Proposer’s argument that getting rid of the tram there would make more efficient use of Des Voeux Road Central and
nearby, is unsound. While there are likely many ways and means to make more efficient use of the said road section such as
by rationalising bus routes, frequency and usage there, removing the tram there actually works completely against efficient use of the said road section (see above).
6. Tram is one of the best heritage in HK that needs keeping and there is no better way to keep it than by daily efficient use of it for the many HK people and tourists in the said area.
