I’ve provided much information re options for internet while travelling overseas in my other post.  Please refer there for basic info including Japan.  However; travellers to Japan are spoilt with so many options, I’m going to discuss below and make some recommendations.  Your specific needs (such as no. of days, data only or if you want voice call too, internet speed, wifi router or SIM card, pick up location, etc) would obviously dictate which particular one you want.    Read on..

I found this informative survey on available options, well worth a read.  Some general info, using a WiFi router would be easier as no messing around with your phone settings and if any mobile with WiFi capability will be OK- no worries.  If you go for the cheaper option of SIM cards, then most these services support Android and iPhones and tethering is allowed.  But iPhone users need to check their site as some do not allow tethering on iPhones and some do not provide nano-SIM for iPhone 5 and 6.  Below is a comparison for various services, so you can clearly see which one you want based on your needs.  From below, it seems that eConnect is recommended for high data/high speed router, NTT SIM for the cheapest general use, and b-mobile is a flexible option.  But if you want voice calls too, I’m afraid you need to pay a considerable premium.  (HK$1 = 15.3 yen at Apr/2015).  Click the links below to go to their sites for details.   Can order online from 4 to 14 days in advance.  If you pick up the SIM or router from other the direct service shop, you have to set your APN settings according to the provider.  They’s provide instructions, click here for an example from b-mobile.  Happy travelling.
